Semarang, 24 April 2025 – Agribusiness Study Program Faculty of Animal Husbandry and Agriculture, Diponegoro University (UNDIP) successfully held an Online Visiting Professor activity by presenting Prof. Lei, Li-Fen from the Department of Agricultural Economics, National Taiwan University (NTU), Taiwan. Carrying the theme “Agribusiness and Commodity Markets: Exploring Structures for Sustainable Growth in Asia”, this activity aims to enrich the perspective of the academic community in understanding the dynamics of agribusiness and commodity markets in the Asian region.
In his presentation, Prof. Lei emphasized the importance of building an adaptive, inclusive, and technology-based agribusiness structure to answer the challenges of modern agriculture. He explained how the limitations of natural resources in Taiwan can be overcome through the integration of production systems with markets, farmer-company partnerships, and the use of e-commerce as an effective marketing strategy.
The Kua Kua Orchard case study presented by Prof. Lei is a real example of how agribusiness can drive economic growth based on local commodities, such as sweet potatoes. With a value chain approach and a solar system structure that makes the company a center of innovation, farmers can gain market access, capital support, and guaranteed purchase of crops.
“Sustainable agribusiness growth must be designed by considering social, economic, and environmental aspects in a balanced way. In addition to being a business venture, agribusiness is very important for humanity in an effort to meet food needs,” said Prof. Lei in a discussion session.
Through this forum, it is hoped that there will be inspiration for regional collaboration and the application of agribusiness models that are relevant to local conditions, to encourage sustainable agriculture in Indonesia. The Visiting Professor Online Program is part of Diponegoro University’s initiative to become a World Class University and build a cross-country knowledge network and improve the quality of higher education in agriculture and commodity-based business.
